Best part? Dawkins is an SJ, lol. Doin’ it right.
I didn’t get this at first, but hahaha.

I can’t believe this.
Can this man be kicked out of biology please
You don’t “kick someone out” of biology. Also, the point of his tweets was a purely linguistic one. He was demonstrating the importance of defining a word before constructing an argument around it.

Also, it’s not just bikini-clad women.
Consciously making an effort to mentalize might counteract this, but people dehumanize drug addicts, homeless people, etc.
Princeton University psychologist Susan Fiske took brain scans of heterosexual men while they looked at sexualised images of women wearing bikinis. She found that the part of their brains that became activated was pre-motor - areas that usually light up when people anticipate using tools. The men were reacting to the images as if the women were objects they were going to act on. Particularly shocking was the discovery that the participants who scored highest on tests of hostile sexism were those most likely to deactivate the part of the brain that considers other people’s intentions (the medial prefrontal cortex) while looking at the pictures. These men were responding to images of the women as if they were non-human.

This is SO goddamn ridiculous, and also appropriate and unsurprising.

Was a second run done on heterosexual women looking at sexually presented men (e.g. with their shirt off)? I think it’s necessary to compare the responses of both women and men if we want to draw any gender-oriented conclusion about what’s going on here. For all we know, both men and women might view sexually presented people (that they find attractive) as objects. In addition, it’s important to note that all of this is likely outside the man’s control, and is a product of evolution. So while it’s okay to be shocked and disgusted, it’s not okay to blame men for this. They’re accountable for their actions, not their brain response patterns.
